Gorch Fock I

Until the end of April 1945 the Gorch Fock I, built at Blohm+Voss in Hamburg, had her home in Stralsund as a training ship for cadets with the 1st ships’ regiment. She survived every bomb attack unscathed, until she was scuttled before the Hanseatic city by a demolition squad on 30th April 1945. Until the middle of 1947, the wreck was rusting away about 150 m southwest of the Rügen peninsula Drigge. Then she was salvaged and, in June 1947, the Gorch Fock I was again afloat. On 15th June 1951, after repairs, she again went into service under the Soviet flag as the “Tovarishch”. Since 25th September 2003, the Gorch Fock I has been back at her home port and free to visit.
